ABOUT BENGAL & SAVANNAH CATS:

Both the Bengal cat and Savannah cat are bred down from species of wild cats.  The Bengal comes from the Asian Leopard Cat and the Savannah comes from the African Serval.

Many times, cats of these breeds are referred to as 'F' and a number.  The number denotes how many generations removed that particular cat is from their wild ancestor.  If no F designation is present, it typically means that
the cat or kitten is five or more generations removed from the wild cat.  Both Bengal and Savannah cats are registered with TICA and are eligible to be shown.  The Savannah cat is currently not eligible to compete for championship status as of yet.  It is considered a Preliminary New Breed.

Bengals are typically rosetted and come in Brown, Silver and Snow. The come in Blue, Chocolate, Sorrel and Melanistic (Black), although these colors are not eligible for championship competition as of yet.  Their coats are pelted with a mink feel and many are glittered or show a distinct sheen in either gold or silver.  They are very dense and muscular for their size and move lower to the ground like their forest dwelling ancestor.  Bengals are typically the size of a domestic cat.  Males 12-15 pounds and females 7-10 pounds.  Although some males in certain breeding programs might be slightly larger.

Savannahs are typically black spotted.  The wild Serval comes in Black, Golden and Snow all with spots and as a result, the Savannah does as well.  The silver is under development.

Savannahs are large in the F1 generation.  Males have been as large as 25 pounds.  As the generations of Savannah progress down through the F2-F5 generations, they typically are progressively smaller.  This all depends on the domestic breeds used to breed away from the African Serval.  By the time they are at the F5 generation, typically they are large domestic cat sized.  This breed is easily trained to walk on a leash in public and draws lots of attention.  It is usually gold in background color with black spots and they are typically more active than the Bengal.

Both the Bengal and Savannah make wonderful pets and love to play in the water.  They need lots of attention when very young to bond with their new owners.  Once bonded, the bond is permanent and they are very devoted.  They can be shy of strangers, but once they are comfortable, they put on a great show!
